Spiti Valley rewards planning. The road from Chandigarh climbs through Shimla, Kalpa and Nako before reaching Kaza, and the window for a smooth drive is narrower than most people expect.
Mid-June through early October is generally the most reliable stretch, once Kunzum Pass opens for the season and the Manali-Kaza link road is clear of snow. July and August bring green valleys but also monsoon-triggered landslides on the Kinnaur stretch, so the Shimla-Kalpa-Kaza route is usually the safer approach in those months.
September is a favourite among regular travellers — clearer skies, fewer tourists, and both entry routes usually open. Whichever month you choose, budget two acclimatisation stops (Kalpa or Nako, then Kaza) before pushing on to Chandratal, since the altitude climbs quickly.
A hill-trained driver and a Premium SUV or Luxury vehicle make the biggest difference on this route — ground clearance and driver experience matter more here than on any other circuit we run.
